Council Question time

This week as usual, I attended the Council Meeting where I requested an answer to my question asked at the Council meeting on 9th November 2011.
My question was regarding the removal of the sign on the Airport Road, Sir Reginald Ansett Drive that runs from the railway line to the Whitsunday Coast Airport.
This section of the road was named for Sir Reginald Ansett in recognition of the vision and monetary contribution he made to the upgrade of the Whitsunday Coast Airport in the 1950's. At that time, Ansett owned Hayman Island.
In the 60's I remember the large Ansett helicopters that flew from the then Proserpine Airport to bring tourists to Hayman Island. Those that have been around long enough will remember the little train that took you from the boat or helicopter to Hayman resort. Reg Ansett had the vision in conjunction with the then Proserpine Shire Council to upgrade the Proserpine Airport to enable larger aircraft to land.
The road sign has been missing for over 12 months and I was concerned that this road may loose that important historical connection.
The contribution that Reg Ansett and others made to this area when the Tourist Industry was in its infancy should not be forgotten.
After no action for three months, I have now been assured that the sign would be reinstated in the near future.

We will wait and see

Planning a boating trip? Check the weather before you go!

If you're preparing to head out on the water this summer, check the Bureau's round-the-clock forecast service for all Australian coastal waters.

Four vital checks

There are four things to take note of when planning your boating trip: Warnings, Weather, Wind and Wave Conditions.

1. Warnings current for your boating area

Warnings are the highest priority forecasts. They warn of potentially dangerous wind conditions expected during the next 24 hours. Winds of 26 knots or more indicate rough conditions for small boats.

Type of warning	Average wind speeds indicated
Strong wind	26 knots or more
Gale	34 knots or more
Storm force	48 knots or more
Hurricane	64 knots or more

2. Weather conditions affecting safe navigation and comfort

Coastal water forecasts provide information about conditions that may affect safe boating.

Take note of forecasts indicating reduced visibility from fog or risks to safety and comfort from thunderstorms, lightning or squall conditions.

Some forecasts will also include information on UV levels and the times of day to use sun protection.

3. Wind conditions

To plan your trip for the best conditions, look for forecast trends in wind speeds and shifts in wind direction over the day. Forecast winds are average wind speeds, with gusts being up to 40% stronger.

Wind conditions for the next three or four days can also be found in coastal or local waters forecasts. Three-hourly marine forecast maps are also available from the Bureau's Forecast Explorer tool available in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania. These forecasts are all accessible from the Marine Services website: http://www.bom.gov.au/marine.

4. Wave conditions

Also take note of swell and sea wave conditions and how your boat reacts to short sharp sea waves against longer and flatter, but more powerful, swell waves.

Swell waves don't enter enclosed waterways, but do have a dramatic effect on entrances to these areas.

Enclosed waterways are affected by sea waves waves produced by the wind blowing across the region. A sea height of 1 metre can create enough chop to swamp a small boat. For coastal waters, you need to consider swell and sea waves. Swell waves can be of considerable danger near reefs and breakwaters.

The combination of sea and swell heights indicates the wave conditions you may experience. But you can't just add one to the other. For instance, a 2.5 metre swell and 2 metre seas results in wave conditions over 3.2 metres. Getting forecasts while you're out on the water

You can access our marine website using 3G mobile coverage if you're close to the coast. Forecasts are also provided by VHF and HF radio broadcasts. The Bureau's radio schedule is available at: http://www.bom.gov.au/marine/radio-sat/marine-radio-sat.shtml. Depending on local arrangements, warnings are generally broadcast every hour whilst forecasts are generally broadcast every few hours.

Welcome back to the new school year, particularly all our new students and their families.

Our P & F AGM will be held next Tuesday night at 7pm at the Senior Campus library in Renwick Road. P & F meetings are an open forum for all parents, carers and friends of our school community. They give us the opportunity to learn about what is happening in the school, show support and make important decisions about things that affect our school and our children. Some of our current agenda items include the new school uniform and the new tuckshop.

EVERYONE is welcome to come along to the meetings and I encourage everyone to do so. If you can't attend the meetings let someone know and your issue can be raised on your behalf. The minutes of each meeting are also attached to the school newsletter, and are an important way of knowing the facts so that you remain up to date with the decisions being made.

The more input St Catherine's P&F has from parents and carers, the more the school, and consequently our children, benefit.

All committee positions will be available at our AGM this Tuesday, as well as new positions of Social Representative, Tuckshop and Uniform committee members.

Blackbird International, the current owners of the pearling lugger Antonia, are seeking expressions of interest for her divestment to a suitable organisation or individual interested in restoring her or other options or offers of support.

Despite our best efforts, and whilst we were successful in gaining government support for her restoration, there has been little other corporate or philanthropic support to make significant headway. The new year has seen our board meet and make the decision to divest Antonia to allow us to concentrate on our more immediate and important projects.

Antonia was to be restored into original configuration and increasingly we were becoming aware that it will be extremely difficult to get her into survey to operate in Queensland waters as a commercial vessel. The funding required to do this has now been redirected by our board to our other projects.

Being 60ft in length without the bowsprit, she is a large vessel. She requires full restoration, but is still a good candidate.

She is based on the hard stand at the Townsville Port Authority and needs to be moved ASAP. Interested parties need to be able to consider the available resources to be able to move here immediately. McAleese Transport based in Townsville are available and have moved her before.

Hello to all musicians, students and interested parties,

I am going to run some

Music Workshops

over the holiday break.

Thursdays, from 10am to 3pm

22^nd December, 5^th and 19^th January

You won't need to come to all three but it would be an advantage.

I will have some set pieces to work on.

We will work on a piece agreed on by all, and ..

With any luck, write some music and/or a song ourselves.

We will record some music and produce a short CD

Anyone can participate, as long as they are willing to contribute in a meaningful way to producing music.

I will need some adult assistance with housekeeping and supervision of working groups (if we get enough participants)

Cost will be $30 per participant per session.

Or $60 per participant for all 3.

Family concessions will be available.

And a concession will be given if an adult provides assistance.

A kitchen is available.

You will need to supply your own lunch. Water, tea and coffee provided.

This will not be a child-minding exercise. While all care will be taken participants are responsible for their own actions.

Whit'sunny'days to the 'Wet'sundays

With the upcoming Christmas season on our doorstep, QPWS is ensuring that all of our visitor sites are ready
for the holidays. While all campgrounds and tracks are open for visitors at the moment, any closures due to the
wet season can be found on the DERM website as 'Park Alerts' on the relevant parks pages.

Are you harbouring island hitchhikers?!
One of the amazing things about Queensland is the amount of islands we have that are easily
accessible from the mainland. Unfortunately, tourists are not the only island hoppers- invasive
weed species seeds and burrs (such as Mossman River LEFT and cobbler's pegs RIGHT) also rely
on this accessibility by hitching a ride on clothes, socks, shoes or camping gear!
To try and combat the spread of invasive weeds on our national park islands, QPWS will be
installing a number of de-seeding stations in various islands along the QLD coast. These stations
will highlight to visitors how weeds can be transported by clothing and equipment, and a deposit
bin will be available for seeds and burrs to be placed in for disposal by the Rangers.
The de-seeding stations will be used in conjunction with the ongoing weed management program
throughout December. The next island on the program to receive intensive weed control activities
will be Lindeman Island, occurring in early December.

Open for business
In preparation for the upcoming busy season maintenance of the national park island's day use areas and
campgrounds has been a focus. These works have been completed for the visitor sites in the northern part of
the Whitsundays and will be finalised for the Cumberland islands group leading into Christmas. Therefore all
visitor sites are open with no unseasonal closures anticipated.
On the water, inspections on the public moorings were completed and now have a clean bill of health. Thank
you to those of you who may have assisted QPWS by moving on to enable Rangers to conduct the
maintenance and dive operations safely.

Preserving our natural assets
Feral animal control in the Mackay islands group has been hugely successful over the last twelve months with
the eradication of goats and deer on St Bees and South Percy islands now within sight. Over 2500 goats have
been removed in recent years and now recent culling episodes only return a handful of individuals. Already the
benefits of removing of this feral species have become evident with the recovery of native grasses and the
presence of eucalypt seedlings which have not been seen for decades.
Pending favourable weather conditions some planned burns are programmed to occur on both island and
mainland national parks, particularly in the Conway national and conservation park. Smoke alerts and any
temporary walking track closures will be sent out to the media and Park News subscribers to ensure visitor
safety. Minimal disruptions to visitors are anticipated.

Marine Animal Strandings update
Over the last 11 months there has been a significant increase in the number of marine animal strandings along
the QLD coast. The main cause of these strandings is associated with impacts caused by last summer's
severe cyclone and flooding events on critical marine animal habitat. Seagrass, the primary food source for
dugong and turtle, recorded losses of up to 80% in some areas. Unfortunately, this reduction in food availability
has created a dugong and turtle population in poor condition making them more susceptible to secondary
infections or human related threats such as boat strike or netting.
QPWS undertook a review of all strandings procedures and policies earlier this
year in light of this increase in stranding events. As a result, QPWS has
increased its response efforts and engaged stakeholder to further mitigate the
threats posed by human activities. Each stranding event is recorded and
evaluated by QPWS. This information in turn assists QPWS to identify areas of
concern and implement or refine management actions in that area.
Closer partnerships with community groups, councils and vets have also been established, and all
rehabilitation facilities are operating at capacity. Although the number of stranding events are beginning to
slow, we are likely to continue to experience higher than average stranding incidents until seagrass beds begin
to recover and animal condition improves. Most significant is the concern that these events will have long term
impacts on an already small dugong population in the southern GBR, with numbers less than 5000. This
species will continue to be closely monitored and further investigated. Seagrass bed recovery is also being
closely monitored during this time.
QPWS would like to thank all members of the community for their efforts to date and ask that everyone
continues to report all stranded marine animals via the RSPCA hotline 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625). For
more information about marine animal strandings, please see the attached information sheet.

Christmas office closure
The Airlie Beach QPWS office (Cnr Shute Harbour and Mandalay Rds) will be closed from Saturday 24th
December and will reopen on Tuesday 3rd January 2012.
Throughout the Christmas period, camping bookings can still be made online at www.derm.qld.gov.au (permits
link in the left hand side menu of the home page) or by calling 13 QGOV (13 74 68). The Marine Animal
Strandings Hotline 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625) will continue to be operational 24 hours a day for reporting
any sick, injured or dead marine animals.

Sail training at Bowen this weekend

All welcome to join in a weekend of coaching and training with Jim (TSC), Myra (MYC) and Klaus (WSC)

Please aim to have boats ready to go on the water at 10.00 am Saturday, the weekend will be run like a sprint regatta with multiple races per session and then breaks onshore for debriefing.

There is camping available at Bowen Sailing Club overnight and accommodation close by for those not camping. There will be a small fee to cover shared expenses.

Great chance for those sailors heading down south for their respective National event but open for all sailors to fine tune their sailing skills and get together with their NQ team mates from up and down the coast.

Looking forward to seeing those who can get to Bowen

The Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) is asking everyone to help save the koala by adopting their very own.

CEO of the Australian Koala Foundation Deborah Tabart OAM said she encourages everyone to adopt a koala through the AKF's Adopt-A-Koala program.

"A koala is a perfect gift for any occasion and is a rewarding way to help save the koala", said Ms Tabart.

The AKF estimates there are only 80 000 with potentially as few as 40 000, koalas left in the wild

"It would be heartbreaking if international visitors and indeed Australians could no longer experience the thrill of seeing a koala in the wild" Ms Tabart said.

Koalas on the Australian Koala Foundation's Adopt-a-Koala program live in sanctuaries around Australia and all proceeds from their adoptions go towards saving their wild cousins and preserving their natural habitat.

SAILING FUN! Weekend classes will start the first Sunday after school hols Sunday mornings at 8:30am at the Whitsunday Sailing Club. Adults and children are all welcome to participate. Sunday events include family fun orientated social racing in the afternoon. Whitsunday Sailing Club is now sponsoring some of the costs of training so that sailing is affordable to all families. We are going to have a Bush Dinner starting at 6:00 pm

Corned Beef and Damper with pickles and chutney etc.

Billy tee and coffee. Cost will be $5:00 per plate.

The Bush Dance will start at 7:30 pm and run to around 10:00 pm.

You don't have to come to both but it would be really handy if you could let me know if you intend to come to the dinner.

This will be the last dance for the year.

Hi everyone,

We have received 3 phone calls this morning asking if the Association is meeting tonight, Thursday 29 September at 6 PM. The answer is: NO, not this time.

You may recall two months ago we suggested to meet the last Thursday of each month.

At our recent meeting last month it was decided to change this to the 2nd Thursday.

Then the Committee thought to change the venue time to time in an effort to give more members an opportunity to participate.

I take the opportunity to thank my tenants Kevin and Tony of UBER Restaurant for their contribution and efforts. At the time when all Hotels venues were charging $250 to $450 for renting their conference room, UBER offered WRA their venue free of charge and they came up with a "Pizza and Wine" meal costed at $20 including a donation of $5 to the our Association.

On behalf of all members: Thank You Kevin & Tony, we'll be back.

Reef Gateway Hotel has offered a "Pasta and Wine" deal for $20 including a $5 donation.

As they are booked solid for every Thursday night the Committee has accommodated them

by changing the date to Wednesday. NOW YOU HAVE THE FULL STORY.

Good afternoon all, just a reminder about next Sunday the 28th that we have the under 9 & under 11 carnival on at Rogers Oval in Mackay (just off Bridge Rd behind the Airport).
Carnival starts at 10.00am sharp so we need to be there by 9.30am and it will be finished by 1.00pm.

Hi everyone,

The next bush dance is only a few weeks away.

7:30 pm

Saturday 30th July

at the Bloomsbury Hall.

I have been down to check it out and it looks like a great venue.

Large wooden dance floor, large area with table and chairs and a big kitchen.

Cynthia and friends will be doing the supper again at $3.50 a serve.

There will be tea and coffee and soft drinks available throughout the night.

The Bloomsbury State School P&C will run some raffles and spot prises to raise money for the school.

Cynthia is also organising a bus from Airlie Beach to Bloomsbury and return.

If she gets the right number of people it will cost around $10 a head.

We will have a couple of new dances for you plus the old favourites.

Of course all the dances will be called (instructions given)

We are also keen to put a small demonstration team together to promote the

Bowen is celebrating its 150th birthday on Saturday 18th. The front beach foreshore is holding a big celebration from 6 - 10:30pm. There will be live music, kid's entertainment, food and drink stalls and best of all fireworks at 8:30pm. The sailing club is positioned about 20 meters from the action! Should be a good night for all.

Banana Pocket next bush dance on 18th June. 7:30 pm at Banana Pocket Hall, Lethebrook. I hope you're set to swing, twirl, strut and stride. There will be a light supper available for $3.50 with money raised going to a children's camp in the NT. The Lethebrook community will also be running raffles. For the first time since 1993 the Whitsundays will host the Great Barrier Reef Dancesport Open Championship and the Whitsunday Sailing Club is pleased to announce that Dance Masters' International has chosen the Sailing Club as a venue for this exciting event which runs from 2 4th September 2011.

Rarely held in a regional area, the promoters have a vision of promoting the Whitsundays with an open air marquee and the glistening Whitsunday waters as a backdrop to the glamorous dancers. Televised by WIN TV, the event will attract over 1000 visitors to the region and will include opening and closing functions and spectacular dancing competition throughout the weekend.

Dancesport is what used to be referred to as competitive Ballroom Dancing and it is now recognised by the International Olympic Committee as a sport. There are thousands of dancers registered in Australia and the organisation is part of Sports Australia. The competition is suitable for all ages and categories cover age groups from six years to over 50. Areas of specialty include Standard (traditional waltz), Latin American and New Vogue and there are a further five grades within each group. As with many of the popular dance shows on TV, it is a fantastic spectator sport as well as a wonderful pastime for many participants.

Competitors will come from all over Australia, Japan and Indonesia and bring family and friends as support and spectators. One dance school from the Gold Coast has already confirmed over 180 participants and family. Dancesport is the third most popular sport in Japan and the Australian promoters plan to hold this event in Airlie Beach annually for the next ten years. Similar events in Europe get audiences of over 35,000 so the potential economic benefit to the Whitsundays is enormous.

David Seymour, chairman of Dance Master's International Association (Qld) says, "I believe the future for this area is in event-driven tourism and we believe this should become a major event in the next few years and provide an attraction for the mainland which is not totally weather or water dependant. We are investing a lot of money on the set-up and promotion of the event and we want to form partnerships with key stakeholders and local businesses to guarantee the success and future of this Championship."

The Whitsunday Sailing Club facilities will be used for the Welcome Cocktail Party, VIP guests and media, open-air dancing for competitors and a stunning location for spectators to enjoy the weekend competition. This event fits in-between a heavy social and sporting calendar with The Whitsunday Sailing Club host and sponsor of Airlie Beach Race Week in August and the annual Fun Race on 10 September. Beyond Zero Emissions is an award-winning, independent, not-for-profit organization whose goal is to help facilitate a timely transition to a zero carbon future where atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations are reduced to a safe threshold. The group focuses on research, education and promotion of scientifically-based policy and technology solutions in order to realise this transition.

Solar and wind can supply Australia's energy needs within 10 years. The Zero Carbon Australia Stationary Energy Plan is a 10 year roadmap for 100% renewable energy in Australia. The Plan has been designed by a broad coalition of engineers, academics, and industry experts, is fully costed, uses proven, existing, renewable technologies, can be built within the next decade & produces zero carbon emissions.

The Beyond Zero Emissions forum will discuss what steps need to be taken now to make it a reality.

The evening format has changed somewhat from the previous notice, it will be along the following lines:-

Million Dollar Memo News: TQ kicks goal with new entry

At the beginning of the REWE Group travel video entry, I was wondering about the Easter Bunnies, then all was revealed, they were in fact the Kangaroos of Cologne, Germany and they were feeling a bit down . . .

So they hopped down to REWE Group travel shop and as quick as you can say "Skippy" they were flying off to Queensland.

Developed by five tourism students this entry shows that, at least in Germany, kangaroos still sell Queensland. So let's put more kangaroo on the meat department shelves.

I am sure that when they visit the Whitsundays, staying at Toscana Village Resort in Airlie Beach and take a sailing holiday with Cumberland Yacht Charters and spending time on world famous Whitehaven Beach they will go back to Germany better able to sell Queensland and its many attractions.

What makes this entry outstanding is the fact that over six million holidaymakers travel every year with one of the tour operators of the REWE Group. The Travel & Tourism division of REWE is the second biggest tour operator in Germany. The REWE Group was not only awarded as one of the "Top Employers in Germany 2010" but also the winner of the "German Sustainability Award 2010".

Million Dollar Memo News research found that despite the general economic crisis, invoiced turnover of the entire Travel and Tourism Division at the REWE Group, a key factor for market comparisons, totalled 4.2 billion Euros last financial year.

The 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean destroyed numerous pre schools in Sri Lanka. REWE's Package Tour department supports the construction of new buildings. Indeed, twenty preschools were built.

This is a creative and fun entry and is a credit to these five tourism students who also say they enjoy studying and working at REWE. ABSTRACT Mike Cappo (AIMS)
Counts by divers showed a rapid rise in coral trout populations on shallow reefs closed to fishing in 2004, but the deeper "reds grounds" have been inaccessible to fish scientists until the development of baited video techniques.
In this talk I will present four years of data counting and measuring deep-water reds, coral trout, tusk fish and reef sharks (including tigers and hammerheads) from three types of "shoal ground" with "Baited Remote Underwater Video Stations" {BRUVS} that can film down to 100 metres and are made from cheap components. On average, the results showed more fish and sharks in the green zones but the picture was not consistent for all locations and all habitat types.
I will illustrate these differences with "highlights of play" video from the different types of shoals, and attempt to explain them with seabed swathe-maps.
I will also argue that the public debate over the role of "green zones" is focussing only on one side of the coin fisheries management yet the science underpinning the zoning had a broader focus on enhancing resilience of natural systems. In that regard, line-fishing is a disturbance because it removes predators.
I will show how we have mounted actual fish counts, video and pictures of the seabed on Google earth and YouTube to let the public make up their own minds . . . a picture speaks a thousand words.

Imagine you are running a successful farming operation; then one day a man from the gas company arrives with news that a coal seam gas field lies beneath your feet. From there 3 wells are sunk, then another 18. And then a proposal for another 30, turning your property into a thriving gas field, while threatening the viability of the working farm.
Down the road, the neighbour sells after 48 wells are sunk into his property. The compensation of $250 a year, per well was not much inducement to stay. The wells themselves are estimated to be making the companies a million dollars a year, each.
And then the gas company says they might have to move your house to sink another well into the land.
This is the experience of just one of the farmers featured on Four Corners this week.
Right across Australia gas companies are drilling down through the earth to extract the resource that the industry says will be one of the answers to our future energy needs. Already some $31 billion worth of gas projects have been approved by the Federal Government, which are expected to generate thousands of jobs and billions in revenues.
But this precious resource lies beneath homes and farms, and the food bowls of Australia.
And this is where the gas companies are drilling; prompting a heated conflict over who should pay the price for our energy supplies.

Many people in Queensland need urgent help so it's out with the buckets.

Rotary Club of Airlie Beach collectors' equipped with traditional buckets will be out and about in Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday area collecting funds to add to the Queensland Premier's Flood Relief Appeal

Starting on Thursday morning (January 13) collectors' will be banging the buckets for money to bail out victims of Queensland's flood disaster.

All money raised will go directly to the Premier's Flood Relief Appeal

Heartless, no brain killers in Queensland waters

What has no heart, bones, eyes or brain, is made up of 95% water, and yet is still a remarkably efficient and deadly ocean predator?

If you thought of the box jellyfish you would be right. However, to put this in perspective, there are many creatures that kill more people.

Official records show the box jellyfish has caused 63 deaths since 1884, in waters surrounding Queensland and extending further North.

Deaths by this jellyfish have also been reported from Philippines, Maldives, Japan, Papua New Guinea, South India, Java, Malaysia, and Gulf of Thailand. The Labuan District Hospital in Malaysia recorded two to three deaths every year since 1991.

In the Philippines the multi-tentacled box jellyfish is estimated to cause 20 to 40 deaths every year.

The much smaller Irukandji is the focus of research and investigation with the Whitsunday Marine Stinger management committee working to coordinate research to understand this potentially deadly creature.

But what animal really kills?

According to the National Geographic Channel documentary 'Elephant Rage', some 500 people are killed by elephant attacks each year.

According to the Department of Elephant Research investigating the increase in DBE (death by elephant) cases elephants kill people by sitting on and smothering them, by strangling them with their trunks or by trampling.

Jellyfish, Crocs and sharks hardly rate in the death stakes against the mosquito responsible for the deaths of more than two million people per year due to malaria.

Locally, with the early rain and runoff, there is an increased chance of box jellyfish in local waters. Take precautions and be safe.

Flying a kite

A new approach to harnessing tidal energy is ready for testing with underwater kite power generators tethered to the ocean floor near Ireland.

'Deep Green' tidal kites will be anchored underwater and, using kinetic energy and automatic rudders will fly in figure eights with the oceanic tides. Because water is eight hundred times as dense as air, these kites technically could produce nearly eight hundred times the energy as wind turbines.

Eventually, the silent tidal kite farms could significantly increase green energy across the world if the test is successful.

Beer, girl, coconuts, boat

Three teenage boys, who had attempted to row the sixty miles between two small Tokelau Pacific islands, became lost and drifted for fifty days across nearly 700 nautical miles (1300Kms) of the Pacific in a tinny.

A more complete story is now coming out how the three boys, two aged 15 and one 14, found themselves in this predicament.

It all started with a girl.

In October, a sporting event was held on Atafu, the Tokelauan atoll that is the boys' home. One of the attendees was a girl from a neighbouring atoll, Fakaofo. At least one of the boys was smitten by the young lady.

When she left their island, the three boys decided to go visit her. Reportedly, alcohol may have played a part in the decision. Around midnight on the day of her departure, they stole a skiff and brought along a bag of coconuts, some beer and a fuel tank.

The fuel ran out, so they decided to row to the neighbouring atoll, some sixty miles away.

Instead, they got lost and drifted for fifty days before they were picked up by a passing tuna fishing boat.

Remarkably, all three boys are in relatively good health a bit sunburned, thin and thirsty, but generally OK.

Volunteers wanted for local Sailability

Sailability Whitsunday is a local branch of an international organisation facilitating sailing for everyone, regardless of age or ability.

The local group has incorporated with Sailiability Queensland and is calling for help and volunteers to attend a meeting on Thursday, December 9.

Spokesperson Bruce Carter says they have had assistance from the state organisation to set up the group and now wants the community to get behind it.

"The organization's purpose is to facilitate sailing for everyone, regardless of age or ability with emphasis on opportunities for people with disabilities". Mr Carter told The Guardian.

"Nationally, Sailability Australia is a Yachting Australia Committee whose key objective is to encourage and facilitate sailing and boating throughout Australia for people with disabilities in social, recreational and competitive activities.

An important aspect of the organisation is that availability of the Access dinghy designed to appeal to that huge majority of the world's population who would love to have a go at sailing, but find it too difficult or uninviting to do so.

"Whether as a recreation, a competition sport or a therapeutic activity; the Access Dinghy design features allow total novices of any ability level to sail with little or no tuition, in safety" Mr Carter added.

Around the world, Access Dinghies are introducing whole new communities to sailing. Apart from the development of revolutionary sailing craft and supportive equipment, the Access Dinghy Sailing System also fosters the formation and development of the innovative "accessible sailing" network throughout the world.

An Access dingy will be available at the meeting for inspection.

People with disabilities are an entire segment of the community who want to enjoy and will travel to social and competitive events designed to include them.

Disabled people need the same thing as other tourists; facilities and access that are suitable to their needs.

The branch will soon have a web site and the meeting on Thursday December 9 at 5.30 downstairs at the Whitsunday Sailing Club will establish a plan for future training and events.

Free boat festival

Entry to the Australian Wooden Festival on Hobart's waterfront in February will be free for the first time.

The State Government has given an additional $300,000 to the festival to make it free for the public and allow the perimeter fences to come down.

Premier David Bartlett says getting the fences down was an important part of getting more people involved and spreading the economic benefits of the festival.

Jessica Watson, the youngest person to sail solo round the world, will be a special guest at the festival in February.

Travellers radio Net

The Travellers Net, a voluntary service to the amateur radio community will run in a new time slot from 04:00 UTC to 05:00 on a frequency of 21.185 MHz

The Travellers net commenced soon after the introduction of the Novice Class licence in Australia to allow travellers with Novice calls a similar service to the 20 metre Traveller's Net which runs on 14.116 opening at 02:00Z for full calls.

The operators on both nets log call sign, name and planned overnight stop for all travellers who check in each day, pass any messages as requested to their family and friends.

Propeller injures

A woman was recovering in Rockhampton Hospital after she had to be evacuated from Great Keppel Island for medical treatment.

The woman suffered a large laceration to her lower leg from a boat propeller.

An ambulance representative said the woman was standing too close to a boat.

The Whitsunday bare boat industry are holding an "open day" at Abel Point Marina on Monday the 16th August 2010. This Monday will be the lay-day for Meridien Marina's Airlie Beach Race Week, so the town the Abel Point Marina will alive with sailing activity. The Open Day is from 10am - 4pm and a great opportunity to view a range of spectacular bareboats sized from 30 to 48 feet. Set up as floating hotel apartments on the water, there is plenty of comfort amongst the fleet from renowned Australian and International boat manufacturers including Fontaine Pajot, Trawler, Seawind, Lightwave, Voyager, Perry,  Beneteau, Catalina, Hanse and Bavaria.

Not known to everyone, around 200 bareboats are offered for charter in the Whitsundays, making it one of most popular means of having an aquatic holiday in Australia. Bareboats are "skipper yourself", so you get together a group, food, beverages and head out to the islands for 5,7, 10 or more nights without formal captain or crew.... after getting a briefing of course!! Bareboat operators in the Whitsundays speak with you twice a day by radio to ensure that you are safe and have good plans as you move amongst the 74 islands, reefs and resorts of the Whitsundays, Great Barrier Reef.

* Audi Hamilton Island Race Week is now in its 26th year and going from strength to strength with a range of sailing and social events unequalled in this or most other countries. Aussie winter sailing around the Whitsunday islands - August 20 - 28.

* Multihull Solutions Whitsunday Multihull Rendezvous - August 28 to September 3th organised by Abel Point Yacht Club provides a great format for multihull sailors. Of course, there is a social calendar with something for everyone.

Ngaro Sea Trail officially opened

On 2 June 2010, the Whitsunday Ngaro Sea Trail Great Walk was officially opened with a celebration at Whitehaven Beach. Guests were treated to exquisite weather whilst representatives of Traditional Owners began the launch with a Smoking Ceremony, followed by the unveiling of interpretation displays, and two short walks to experience the Sea Trail. QPWS have begun distributing the new Whitsunday national park islands visitor guide, which incorporates all of the Ngaro Sea Trail information for tourists.

Whales spotted in the Whitsundays

Once again, whales have begun their annual breeding migration north, and here in the Whitsundays we are lucky enough to witness these spectacular creatures throughout their journey. To ensure the safe passage of the whales in our waters, all vessels must adhere to whale watching regulations including watching distances. For further information, see:

Mackay Highlands Great Walk now open

The damage caused by Cyclone Ului was quite extensive in the Mackay Highlands Great Walk, and Rangers have been working for some time to ensure the Great Walk is safe and accessible for tourists to traverse. Rangers are pleased to announce that the Great Walk is now open for use again - enjoy!

Update on Coral Beach track

To conduct routine track repairs and maintenance, the Coral Beach track and car park was closed in early June. This work is on schedule and both the track and the car park are due to reopen on 20 July 2010.

Butt Bins in place

To reduce the unsightly amount of cigarette butts affecting Tongue Point, Butt Bins were installed at both ends of the Hill Inlet track. Data on the effectiveness of these bins will be quantified next month.

The war on rubber vine continues

Rangers are continuing their spraying program to halt the spread of rubber vine Cryptostegia grandiflora on Gloucester Island, with teams targeting areas of outbreaks.

Planned burn program

QPWS will be conducting hazard-reduction burning operations on the Whitsunday national park islands between July and October 2010. These burns are being undertaken for asset protection, weed control and conservation purposes. Some areas may be affected by smoke during these burns. For further information, see:

Responsible Park Practices: Bird watching

Queensland has more than 600 species of birds about 80 percent of all bird species found in Australia. Here are some hints for better bird watching in parks and forests.

Plan your bird walk for early in the morning or late afternoon when they are usually most active.

Never feed birds let them find their own food.

Keep noise to a minimum; what seems quiet when alone can be loud when in a group and may disturb other park visitors and wildlife.

July 5 Buddhist Study Group at Villa Botanica

Dear all,

On Monday 5th July, we will be hosting our next Buddhist Study Group at Villa Botanica. This will be the 3rd in a series of 12 study nights and the topic will be one that you may not be on top of but will definitely be familiar with: meditation. Meditation is something most of us have tried but many of us have a sense of failure about. And yet the benefits once you can truly still your mind are boundless: increased energy, creativity, inner calm, happiness and self esteem.

The session will be led by Venerable Tenzin Namdag. For those of you who are yet to attend one of our monthly learning sessions, Namdag is an Australian Buddhist nun, formerly a successful businesswoman, who has trained in the tradition of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. She has run many courses in the US, worked with Bill Gates as well as many inspiring spiritual teachers. In this next session, Namdag will show you different types of meditation and how to train your mind to do what you want it to do and attain a very alert state in which you protect your mind from being disturbed by unnecessary thoughts. Meditation is not an end in itself but when combined with greater wisdom is a key tool in attaining peace and happiness.

Session time: 6.30 pm 8.30pm approx.

Beachworx to do it in style - free!

Its seems that there is no limit to the extent that Airlie Beach will go to attract people, tourism and valuable spend. Absolutely dependent on tourist numbers recent calls from organisations like Tourism Whitsundays have been out pounding the pavement seeking additional funding to market the area at a greater level. Calls ring out from local business for tourist taxes, underwriting flights, upgrade the main street and other expansive endevours.

Beachworx owner, Lyn Gregson has taken a big step in the other direction, heralding this weekend as the 21st birthday of the store in Shute Harbour Road, Airlie Beach adjacent to the lagoon. To celebrate Beachworx is giving away premium surf, swim and fashion brands for free. Supposedly without any strings or tricks, shoppers from Friday 2nd July to Sunday 4th July will be welcome to visit the store and select one item each from racks and racks of quality gear until stocks run out.

"Its a genuine celebration," says Lyn. "Beachworx is a name synonymous with Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays. 21 years here makes us the original surf wear outlet so rather than advertise widely a half price sale that won't excite anyone, we decided to do it in style - free!"

It is yet to be seen whether this or any other measure will bring the shoppers or the tourists back. Lyn's activity is one of the provocative moves that she has made given a vast community involvement spanning tourism boards, chambers of commerce and business leadership. We wish her well and a very happy birthday!

When: Sunday 20 June, 9 am to 12 pm

Where: Galbraith Creek, Galbraith Park Drive, Cannonvale (follow the signs)

Why: Donate an hour or two of your morning to help continue the revegetation of Galbraith Creek - adding to habitat values, reducing weeds and reducing erosion.

Grab a snag from the bbq on your way in or while having a break with other volunteers. The site is suitable for all ages.

Hand tools and refreshments will be provided. Please wear closed in shoes, hat and gloves.

This project has received cash funding from the Reef Catchments Mackay Whitsunday Public Fund.

Art Whitsunday 23^rd annual Art Exhibition = Shingley Beach Resort over this weekend.

Cyclone Ului book to be launched looking for local contributions

Are you a budding photographer?

Do you have an image that depicts the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Ului?

Would you like the opportunity to have your photograph published?

Whitsunday resident and graphic designer Ann Parrótt is in the process of publishing a book on Cyclone Ului and is looking for contributions from local residents, Mackay to Bowen and everywhere inbetween.

A selection of submitted photographs will be published in a unique keepsake book which will be published and available throughout the region in late June.

If you would like to be a part of history in the making, submit your image/s to cycloneului@optusnet.com.au by Thursday 3 June 2010. Photographs must be the original image of the contributor.

All images featured in the book will contain the name of the photographer, the location of the photo and a brief caption describing the photo.

Fleet to be Blessed on Whitsunday

BISHOP of North Queensland, Bill Ray will conduct the 2010 Blessing of the Fleet service on Whitsunday May 23 at the Whitsunday Sailing Club in Airlie Beach

It will be 240 years since First Lieutenant James Cook named the Whitsunday Passage in 1770.

This year's service also marks 21 years since Father Keith Felgate started the annual Blessing of the Fleet in Airlie Beach.

The Blessing of the Fleet in Airlie Beach is held each year on Whitsunday, otherwise known as Pentecost Sunday.

A Blessing of the Fleet is part of the calendar of many seaside and fishing communities around the world.

Like Easter, Whitsunday or Pentecost Sunday is on different dates each year.

Cook and his crew sailed through the magnificent passage he named Whitsunday on his voyage of adventure and discovery.

In addition, Cook named Pentecost Island for the religious occasion.

Father Keith Felgate was inspired to conduct an annual blessing of the fleet here at Whitsunday in 1989.

"As we conduct the Blessing of the fleet on Whitsunday, my thoughts turn to Father Keith who in his retirement is no doubt also thinking of us," says co-founder Cap'n Dan Van Blarcom.

Community groups are invited to participate in the Blessing of the Fleet on the seafront lawn at the Whitsunday Sailing Club, Airlie Beach from 10am, May 23. The sail past of yachts is from 11 am from the sea wall.

It's that time of year again! Easter in Airlie Beach means some terrific small boat racing on the waters of Pioneer Bay.

This year we're again incorporating the Queensland State Tasar Titles, so for those of you planning to head to the Nationals here in July it will be a great opportunity to get a feel for the local conditions.

The Easter Regatta is open to all classes of off-beach boat - junior, senior, one hull and two. So, whether you sail a Corsair, Laser, 125, 49er, Sabot, Opti, Nacra, Hobie, Foiling Moth - or one of a hundred other classes of boat, we'd love to see you there!

MRCSD's strategic planning forum in Proserpine next Thursday 25th March
Who is MRCSD? What do they do?
What are key issues in your local area?
How can MRCSD work with you to address these issues?

MRCSD is our region's social development council and its time for us to set our overall strategic direction. We all know there has been a lot of changes in our communities as well as in the community services sector recently. MRCSD is changing too. We seek to be a representative body for the community but we can't do that without finding out what you all think. So it's time to hit the road and get listening.

Public forums, group meetings and individual interviews will be conducted across the Isaac, Whitsunday and Mackay regional council areas. Everyone from the community, government and industry is welcome to participate.
