July 21, SOF AGM

 To all SOF Members and Supporters,
   It's a long time since October 2004 when SOF was first formed. But threats to our  public foreshore land, seabed and community amenity just keep coming on, so it's been imperative for SOF to just keep going on.

Our "Save Shute Harbour" campaign is treading water while we await the decision of the Co-ordinator General. We understand a supplementary EIS has been requested and no decision will be made until at least the end of the year.  However, to keep this issue in the forefront, SOF is planning a letter writing campaign to both the Co-ordinator General and the Federal Minister of the Environment, the Hon. Peter Garrett.

The reclaiming of seabed for private development is a potential threat to our whole coastline. It seems if there isn't enough foreshore land available you just apply to the state government for leases over seabed. The social and environmental implications of this are enormous.

The support given to SOF by our community has become vital in what is virtually a "war of attrition".

By delaying, adjourning, postponing; developers, state and local authorities make it difficult for the wider community to maintain their concern and interest in issues which could have devastating effect if allowed to proceed unchecked.

But the Whitsunday community can and has maintained its passion. The Airlie Lagoon carpark is still public land; our airport hasn't been sold; and we don't have a polluting, health threatening oil shale mine & plant on the Goorganga wetlands.

Five years on, SOF continues to fight in the public interest on several fronts but we need your help continuing this work.

We need you;

  • to become or renew your SOF membership;
  • to make a donation if your circumstances allow;
  • to register as a volunteer to help with our public awareness campaigns, fund raising, etc.
  • and to attend meetings so that you can help form strategy and actions.
    Our Annual General Meeting is next Tuesday 21st July 5.30pm Spinnakers Room Wanderers Airlie Beach. Everyone is very welcome to attend.

Thanks for your support,

Faye Chapman
