Subject: CROCODILE AT AIRLIE BEACH (X2)

Info has been received from Wildlife Ranger that two crocs are currently in the muddy bay area of Airlie Beach near the Port of Airlie construction.

One croc is about 2.5m and the other is about 3.5m long. The larger is currently aggressive having today approached a small vessel in an aggressive manner with tail raised (sign of attack apparently). QPWS have photos.

The Seaforth Markets

The Seaforth Markets are run every Sunday, unless the weather is not fair, 8 -
11.  They have 15 - 20 regular stall holders ranging from books, art and
craft, fresh fruit and veg, jams, cakes, preserves.
They are situated under the mango trees in the park on Palm Avenue,
passed the  ambulance station.
They normally charge $10 per site (but are waving that fee for us as we
are doing a community service).  Monies raised go to the Progress and
Sports Association.  At the moment they are doing a community project to
build an under cover area near the tennis court.
It is a pleasant drive to an old fashion country market.

International Talk like a Pirate Day in Airlie Beach – Saturday September 20, 2008 – Everyone likes to talk like a pirate so in a town like Airlie you can also dress up like a pirate and have some fun. The Pirates of the Whitsundays are the polite pirates who use their manners and say please and thank you, and ensure that visitors always come first.

Anyone can have their own party, dress up and talk like a pirate. If raising money for charity is your thing, send the treasure to VMR. Or is that VMAAARRRRRRRR!

Aug 23, Youth Fashion Awards

Young people in the Whitsundays will have the opportunity to shine at the Whitsunday Youth Affairs Committee's (WYAC) 'A Splash of Fashion' Youth Fashion Awards and Art Awards to be held this Saturday, 23 August.
The event will provide over fifty local young people the chance to showcase their talents in various fields, including modelling, art, fashion design, dancing and music.
Cian Middleton, President of WYAC said the event was in its tenth year and is run by young people for young people.
"The event provides an opportunity for youth to gain a wide range of skills simply through participating - whether as an event organiser, model, or designer," Mr Middleton said.
Young people will compete in the Modelling, Student Design and Art Competitions, which will be judged by local identities with experience in the relevant industries.
"Prizes have been kindly donated by local businesses," Mr Middleton said.
"However every participant stands to gain through improved confidence and the chance to have a great time on stage in front of their friends and family," he said.
The Modelling Competition will see young people aged 13-18 years model the season's latest fashions from local fashion houses, including La La, Moocha's, Beachworx, Colour Me Crazy, The Beach Shack, Men Do, The Strand, and the SK8 Penguin.
The Student Design Competition will feature four categories - 5 to 9 Party Time, Street Cred, Express Yourself, and Trash and Treasure.  The latter encourages young people to use their creativity to recycle old clothing into an entirely different garment.
For the artists there is the Art Competition - inviting young people aged 13-18 years to enter an artwork in their chosen medium, whether it be painting, drawing, sculpture or photography.
Whitsunday Regional Council's Youth Services Officer Wendy Olsen said the event was a showcase of young people's talents and abilities.
"I encourage everyone to come along and enjoy what promises to be an exciting and entertaining evening," Ms Olsen said.

Gymnastics Display Saturday August 17 at the Airlie Beach Markets

The PCYC Gymnastics Display group are delighted to present their very first public performance at the Airlie Markets. The Displays will start at 10:30 and 11:30 on Saturday August the 17th at the Airlie Beach Markets.

There will be three different routines choreographed to music. The Warm-up routine shows some of our flexibility exercises these keep us supple and strong and prepare us for the harder tumbling. Our most complicated routine is the Acrobatics routine where we work as a team using some of the skills we learnt this year including tumbling, turns and acrobalance. My favourite is the mini-tramp routine because we get to jump, land and get heaps of air.

"I am feeling slightly nervous about the difficult tricks but I am also really exited because this is the first display out of the PCYC hall.  We have done two smaller displays in the past with the little display group for the Soccer Ball and the Eco Kids Awards at the PCYC."

"I am really pleased about the change of gymnastics at the beginning of this year as I could only train for one hour a week last year and now I can train for three. I used to be the only gymnast doing three hours a week but its been so much fun preparing for this display that lots of my friends have started doing three hours a week as well." Tyga Diesal age 12.

Our youngest Gymnasts the 2-5 year olds start on Friday from 10:15 to 11:00. On the Saturday after the display the junior Gymnasts aged 6-8 years go from 9:00 till 10:00 and the general gymnastics 8 and above train from 10:00 to 11:00.

In order to create some community interest and get as many people to attend as possible we were hoping to raffle off a prize/prizes on the day. I was hoping that you might be able to get in touch with your contacts and let people/organisations know that we would greatly appreciate any donations of prizes. All funds raised will go directly to the cancer council to assist with cancer research. As you are probably already aware, the Whitsunday Neighbourhood Centre is a not for profit organisation that provides a variety of services aimed at assisting members of the community. These events are a great way to get the community involved and make them aware of the important services provided by the Neighbourhood Centre as well as to raise money for a great cause. I realise that it this fairly short notice, but any assistance you can provide would be much appreciated. Any people wishing to donate something for the morning tea can contact me at the Neighbourhood Centre on 4946 7850. Likewise, should you require further information, please give me a call. Thanks so much for your help. It is much appreciated.
Kind Regards, Courtney Franzway, Community Development Officer

The Worst Opening Line Ever - Customer Service Workshop

Few people today have to respond as quickly to changes in consumer demand as does the "salesperson.” What sold like wildfire yesterday may be dead stock tomorrow. Similarly, salesperson to customer sales techniques that may once have worked wonders in our fast-paced world now may lead to disastrous results, especially among sophisticated, street-wise consumers who have "heard it all" and "seen it all.”

Presented by Debra Templar, Debra is an expert trainer and speaker, who has lived and worked in Australia, New Zealand and the USA, focusing on building businesses for her and others. She is past National Business Development Manager for the Australian Retailers Association’s training division and since 2000 owner/director of Australian Retail Services, a Melbourne company that works predominantly within the retail/service/hospitality industries on such issues as sales and service skills.

Youth Radio to start in Airlie Beach

The Whitsunday PCYC is looking for energetic and creative young people between the age of 13 and 18 who’re interested in learning to work in radio.
Whitsunday PCYC Branch Manager, Sgt John Dickinson, said the club had obtained a Low-Power Open Narrowcast (LPON) FM radio licence to broadcast in the Airlie Beach/Jubilee Pocket area.
“We’re still in the very early planning stages and what we want to do now is to meet with young people interested in playing a key role in getting this radio station up and running.
“We need a name for the station, we need a station logo and we need feedback on what sort of programs young people in this area would like to hear on this new radio station.
“We’d also like to hear from young people interested in joining a training program to learn how to be radio announcers, producers and technicians,” Sgt Dickinson said.
“By becoming involved in this project young people will be able to contribute to their community as well as learning skills they can use in their future careers.
“The PCYC already has successful youth radios operating at Beenleigh – the most northerly town on the Gold Coast – and at Palm Island, off Townsville.
“It’ll be great to add another one here at Airlie Beach,” he added.
An information afternoon is being held on Monday, February 4th between 4 p.m. and 5.30 pm at the PCYC headquarters on Shute Harbour Road on the southern edge of Airlie Beach. Anyone interested in being a part of the Airlie Beach Youth Radio is welcome to attend.
